This is a sad, crazy, powerful image. So much “fake,” so much “real.” The cop represents us… at least in theory… consent of the governed and all that… we the people form a government… and a few of us put on uniforms to help insure we’re safe and secure…
And the dinner party is us too. The romantic, nostalgic harmony we like to back-project. The future is always uncertain and cold, the past, so warm.
Were we ever that dinner party in harmony? Did we just put up with it all for fear of social and cultural pepper spray - every bit as powerful as the chemical?
When did “safety officers” become criminals? Heartless thugs? Will he go home to his own idyllic dinner table?
